IUPUI leadership should seek feedback from staff more often

I applaud the university for undertaking this review, but at this point a great deal of damage has already been done to the reputation of IUPUI as an employer. Regular reviews (perhaps annually, or every two years) would help the administration detect negative trends and address them earlier.

Creation of a Leadership Development Program designed to engage, develop, and motivate highly talented and innovative IUPUI staff who are interested in career advancement or have recently graduated while employed by IUPUI. Staff Advocate

Currently, there is a culture of fear present at IUPUI that is detrimental to the community, students, and progress of the institution. When there is ongoing abuse of power and misuse of staff, there is nowhere to go on this campus. There should be a safe place for staff to raise concerns that would have the power to advocate for and protect the employee. This advocate should have oversight and be able to address concerns ...more »

Staff Professional Development Portfolio (PDP)

In support of IUPUI staff professional development efforts, staff need a mechanism to record and store their professional development history, documents, publications, etc. Similar to the Faculty Reports and student ePortfolio, the PDP allows staff to maintain their files and resumes online. The PDP can allow access to others and supplement the electronic application when applying for other IU jobs. Some units at IUPUI ...more »

adequate staffing

HR needs to establish the number of staff required for each dept. based upon number of faculty served, number of adjunct faculty served, number of GRAD students served AND overall enrollment. Currently some dept's with smaller constituencies have 3 times the staff as other departments. This lopsided approach needs to be changed.

Job Descriptions

Job descriptions should be revisited every three years for rewrite whether or not it might result in an upgrade. Many positions have had the same description for 20-30 years. If we were doing Performance Management as we should this would not be a daunting task but something that could easily happen as a result of the last three Performance Management documents for any given position. Sometime people take on different ...more »

Fair Treatment of IUPUI Staff during Mergers and Privatizations

I keep hearing the theme that IUPUI want to develop and promote great working conditions for staff….but what staff? Dozens upon dozens of IUPUI employees, many that have spent many years and are near or passed retirement age have been abandoned and sent packing to become IUH employees. They have lost benefits and pay along with vacation time and working conditions. These are IUPUI employees that are being relegated, with ...more »

Timekeeping

Professional employees should be recognized for the rank they hold and be asynchronous for timekeeping. PA staff that are considered over-time eligible should be able to record their time at the end of the pay period without clocking in and out just as PAE staff. This is a professional rank and should be treated that way.

Suprvisors

Staff should be allowed to rate their immediate supervisors; this could be a helpful tool if used correctly.

Keep Current Employees and Educate Them

Why not stop firing employees to cut costs, use the employees you currently have and just educate them. That way they have the required experience on university policies and programs. There are many employees, such as myself, that take do take the UITS free courses and would love to obtain a degree free.
